Baltimore native Nina ‘Lyrispect’ Ball is an award-winning writer/poet and renaissance woman who seeks to empower and provoke transformation and discovery through meaningful work in the arts . Lyrispect employs activism as an organizer, performer,producer and teaching artist. She received her B.A. at Temple University as a Film and African-American Studies major after graduating from the highly competitive Baltimore School for the Arts as a classically trained actress. Lyrispect has performed from coast to coast from concerts, museums and black-tie galas to school and church assemblies. She has shared broadcasts and stages with Mos Def /Yasin Bey, Saul Williams,Julius Garvey (son of Marcus Garvey)The Last Poets, Eric Benet and Ursula Rucker to name a few. Lyrispect’s work has been featured on two murals in Philadelphia and is currently in pre-production for a third.
Lyrispect is a returning performer for The Trumpet Foundation, The Philadelphia Museum of Art , The African American Museum of Philadelphia and The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Lyrispect’s work has been commissioned and published locally and nationally. She has been captured by such modern artists as Al Burts, Bernard Collins, Lavett Ballard and Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. Nina was also Creative Outreach Director at Fourth Wall Arts Salon and Gallery. She has been recognized by the NAACP, the U.S. Coast Guard, Temple University and other notable organizations . In 2005, Nina received the Sonia Sanchez Women’s Studies award. In 2011, she was the 2-year grantee of the Mural Arts Program Porch Light Initiative with Yale University and Project H.O.M.E.Lyrispect is both member and Co-Executive Director of SpokenSoul215 Collective and Executive Producer of The Harvest Open Mic and Showcase Experience at World Cafe Live where she initiated a media ores-show to provide a place for emerging media makers and artists of relevance. She is an advocate for youth,women, peoples of color and underserved communities.
Lyrispect has been a teaching artist for over 15 years and a performing artist for twice as long. She has worked with The Art Sanctuary and Philadelphia Opera Company,The Painted Bride, Congreso de Latino Unidos, The Asian Arts Initiative and a myriad of culture-rich organizations..Lyrispect has served as a program facilitator of BLACK GIRLS ROCK! INC since 2010.Most recently she served as Director/Co-Director for BLACK GIRLS ROCK!’s Queen’s Camp for Leadership and Excellence in its inaugural years, 2011, 2012,2013 and 2014 respectively. Lyrispect has been a featured speaker and panelist on social justice, HIV/AIDS awareness, poverty, race and gender studies at institutions such as The Barnes Foundation and New York University.
In 2011, Lyrispect was an invited guest of The White House’s “Evening of Poetry” . Since 2012,Nina has served as National Volunteer Strategist with the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AFFRM) , which champions independent Black cinema by providing a vehicle for international and wide-release.
Lyrispect is currently in pre-production for her next project : “Spectrum of a Supernova: Mantras for the Modern-Day Mentalist”.
